What's the difference between water-repellent and waterproof?

Water-repellent fabric sheds light rain and splashes — water beads up and rolls off the surface. Waterproof fabric uses sealed construction (taped seams, membranes) to keep water out even in heavy, sustained rain. TheRec products are water-repellent, which is what most runners and commuters need day-to-day. For monsoon-level downpours, choose a dedicated waterproof rain shell instead.
