Product Details
Caps, sun hats, kids' bucket hats, and lightweight technical outerwear — currently The Altitude windbreaker. Seven cap and hat builds cover different use cases: The Flo (ultralight race-day), Camp Classic (structured everyday), Seven (contoured 7-panel fit), Mesh Rider (maximum breathability), The Earth (trucker style), The Solace (wide-brim sun hat with removable neck flap), and The Little Explorer (kids' bucket hat).
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ is the highest UV rating awarded to textiles — it means the fabric blocks at least 98% of UV rays reaching your skin. It's a property of the weave, not a coating, so it doesn't wash out.
Water-repellent fabric sheds light rain and splashes — water beads and rolls off. Waterproof fabric uses sealed construction (taped seams, membranes) to keep water out in sustained heavy rain. TheRec gear is water-repellent, built for day-to-day drizzle and mist rather than monsoon downpours — for that, a dedicated waterproof shell is the right call.
No — water-repellent, not waterproof. It handles light rain, drizzle, and mountain mist. For sustained heavy rain, use a dedicated waterproof shell.
Design Details
Standalone, it's built for 5–20°C — a full day of active hiking, trekking, or running. Below freezing or in snow, it works as an inner layer under a down jacket.
Yes, as part of a layering system — inner layer under a down jacket in snow conditions, or standalone for active trail days at altitude in milder temperatures.
Heavy rain shells can feel clammy and restrictive in motion. The Altitude is designed to move and breathe with you rather than seal everything in — recycled nylon shell, adjustable hood, elastic cuffs, and a drawcord hem for when conditions change.
Sizing
Two systems:
- Most caps (Camp Classic, Flo, Mesh Rider, Seven, Earth) — one size, adjustable rear strap, fits most adult head sizes.
- The Solace (sun hat) and The Little Explorer (kids) — specific size options; use the size selector on the product page.
The Altitude runs S–XL in two cuts — Male (Aquifer) and Female (Lilac), each with its own measurements. Full chest, shoulder, sleeve, and length measurements in cm are on the size chart page for both cuts.
No — the two cuts are built differently on purpose. The men's cut runs slightly roomier, designed with layering in mind — enough space to wear a base layer or light fleece underneath without feeling restrictive. The women's cut is closer and more fitted, built for freedom of movement rather than layering room. If you're between sizes on the women's cut and want extra layering space, we'd suggest sizing up — the measurements for both cuts are on the size chart.
Fit varies between brands, which is exactly why we'd point you to the actual chest, shoulder, and length measurements on the size chart rather than your usual size elsewhere. The women's cut is intentionally closer-fitting for an athletic, unrestricted feel on the move. If you prefer more room — for layering or just a relaxed fit — size up from your usual measurement.
Most caps and hats are unisex, one size, adjustable. The Altitude comes in two distinct cuts so you can pick the fit that suits you.
Wash & Care
Hand wash preferred — cold water, mild detergent. If machine washing, use a delicate or small cycle, skip the agitator setting to protect the brim shape. Tumble dry low. Never bleach or iron — heat and bleach strip the UPF finish and can warp the brim. Exception: The Earth trucker cap is hand wash only, to protect the printed panels.
Hand wash preferred — cold water, mild detergent (a liquid tech-wash if machine washing; regular detergent leaves residue that blocks the DWR finish). Close zips and Velcro first. Never bleach. Tumble dry low is actually recommended — 20 minutes on low heat reactivates the water-repellent finish. Skip the iron and dry cleaning; if creased, just hang it and it relaxes within a day.
Washing can gradually affect UPF over time, but the fabric's weave density is strong enough to keep protection at UPF 50+ even after repeated washes. On the windbreaker specifically, UPF comes from a combination of a UV-protective treatment and the weave construction — the treatment can wear down with washing, but the dense weave itself is what keeps protection at 50+ regardless. Bleach and high heat accelerate this wear, which is why both are on the avoid list.
Yes — the windbreaker carries a light water-repellent (DWR) finish, and it typically fades after a few washes. Low-heat tumble drying after each wash helps reactivate it, but expect the water-repellency to diminish gradually with wear and washing over time.
With the care above, TheRec caps and the windbreaker are built for years of regular outdoor use. Damage from misuse, neglect, or skipping the care instructions isn't covered under the return or warranty policy.
Packing the Windbreaker
No separate pouch needed — it self-folds into its own integrated chest pocket, turning into a compact pouch about the size of your fist. Many customers clip it to a pack with a carabiner for quick access.
Around 170 grams, folding into its own pocket — light enough to keep in a running vest or daypack side pouch without noticing it's there.
Yes — that's exactly what it's designed for. It packs down small enough to disappear into a vest pocket until the wind or rain picks up.
Materials
A 98gsm woven fabric, 100% recycled pre-consumer polyamide (nylon), UPF 50+ rated and independently lab-verified.
100% recycled nylon ripstop shell, approximately 170gsm, tightly woven for natural sun protection without intentionally added PFAS, with a fluorine-free DWR (water-repellent) finish.
The woven outer shell is GRS-certified recycled nylon. Trims — zippers, elastic, buckles, labels, padding — are not certified. We're specific about this because "fully certified" would overstate it.
Recycled nylon is made from reclaimed nylon waste — post-industrial scrap, used fishing nets, and similar sources — instead of virgin petroleum. It cuts fossil fuel demand, keeps waste out of landfills and oceans, and lowers the fabric's overall carbon footprint versus virgin nylon.
